Abacus

From Accounting to a Complete Business System

Some business ideas begin with the need to solve a specific problem. This is how the story of Bencom and Abacus began – through everyday accounting work and the desire to create a stable and reliable system that would make business operations easier.

The story began in 1994, when Bencom started using computers for accounting activities. With just two computers and a clear idea of what accounting and business operations required, development began that would, over the following decades, grow into a comprehensive business information system.

From the Need for Stability to an In-House IT Department

During the early years, Bencom worked with external programmers to develop its software. However, between 1994 and 2009, three external partners were changed, bringing a number of challenges in terms of stability and continuity of development.

For this reason, an important decision was made in 2009 – an in-house IT department was established, and three young trainee engineers were employed. At the same time, development of a business information system within Bencom itself began.

On 1 January 2011, the first minimally functional version of the system was launched, sufficient for Bencom’s secure operation. In the same year, the software was also offered for sale to Bencom’s clients, while the team gradually expanded.

Abacus Grows Alongside Users’ Needs

What began as an internal system designed to meet accounting needs eventually became much more.

From 2014 onwards, development expanded into various industries – hospitality, retail, manufacturing, transport and other sectors. Different specialised solutions were developed, while Abacus ERP became the central part of the business information system.

The ERP system covers numerous business processes, including:

  • fixed asset records;
  • tools and inventory records;
  • merchandise records;
  • material records;
  • production process records;
  • employment records;
  • service invoicing.

By connecting these modules into a single unit, automated business processes and advanced analyses were made possible, supporting business decision-making.

From a Single System to a Complete Ecosystem of Solutions

The development of Abacus did not stop with the ERP system. The needs of different industries led to the development of specialised solutions that now support various segments of business operations.

These include POS2 for hospitality establishments, POS Merchant for retail companies, RMS for hotels, as well as numerous other specialised modules. Particular focus has also been placed on enabling remote work and centralised data management.

In this way, Abacus today represents much more than accounting software – it is a system that connects different business processes and enables data to be available where it is needed.

More Than Three Decades of Experience as a Foundation for Further Development

More than three decades after the beginning of the story, the basic idea remains the same: to develop stable and reliable solutions that meet the real needs of users.

The experience gained through accounting and everyday interaction with different business processes has enabled Bencom to base software development on concrete challenges from practice. At the same time, continuous improvement and adaptation to market needs remain an important part of Abacus development.

From two computers in 1994 to a comprehensive portfolio of business solutions today – the story of Abacus is a story of continuous development, experience and the idea that technology should support business.
